2009 will bring new US coins designs

Starting in 2009, the US mint will introduce new designs for the Lincoln Penny and the Golden dollar, in addition to their The Presidential $1 Coins Program which started in 2007.

For the Lincoln one-cent coin: The United States Mint will mint and issue four different one-cent coins in recognition of the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth and the 100th anniversary of the production of the Lincoln cent. While the obverse will continue to bear the likeness of President Lincoln currently on the penny, the reverse will change to bear four different designs, each representing a different aspect of the life of Abraham Lincoln.

The themes for the reverse designs represent the four major aspects of Abraham Lincoln’s life, as outlined in Public Law 109-145.

  • Lincoln's Birth in Kentucky (1809-1816)
  • Formative Years in Indiana (1816-1830)
  • Professional Life in Illinois (1830-1861)
  • Presidency in Washington, DC (1861-1865)

The obverse design each year will remain the central figure of the “Sacagawea” design first produced in 2000, and contain the inscription “Liberty.” The reverse design will change each year to celebrate an important contribution of Indian tribes or individual Native Americans and contain the inscriptions “$1” and “United States of America.” Like the Presidential $1 Coins, the Native American $1 Coins will maintain their distinctive edge, golden color and feature edge-lettering of the year, mint mark, “E Pluribus Unum” and “In God We Trust.”
